YOUR HOBBIES ARE OFFICIALLY GOOD FOR YOU
''When you close your eyes at night, do you wish that you could unleash your inner cosplayer identity, and show off that handmade Loki costume to the world? Or perhaps you’re the secret gamer type who’s had a passion for retro games and consoles since childhood, and you’re itching to start a full-on collection? Or maybe you’re an avid card game enthusiast who found inspiration in the Kickstarter-funded Superfight, Exploding Kittens or Utter Nonsense!, and you dream of recruiting your most hysterical friends together to try making your own game?
The point is, as the master of your own universe, you can do all these things. This article by Fay Schopen in The Guardian highlighted the need for adults to indulge generously in their hobbies, even if they’re not exactly encouraged. She mentioned research published by the Society of Personality and Social Psychology, which said that valuing your time (i.e. spending it entertaining your favorite hobbies) over the pursuit of money, actually leads to more positivity and all-round happiness. They reached this conclusion by inventing two characters: one money hungry and working all the time, and the other working less, earning less and valuing her time. Those who identified more with the character who worked less reported experiencing greater happiness. And I’ve got to say, the algorithm makes sense...''
